The Importance of Being Present
Throughout these stressful times, I find myself feeling less present lately. It can be a struggle to face though the daily slog of the economic trials, social struggles, and difficult topics we are inundated with through the news and possibly in our own lives.
I find myself drifting away and thinking about easier times. I day dreamed about a past trip that I loved or a day in the past that was almost perfect. I also find myself thinking ahead to future adventures or maybe just tomorrow getting easier. Although it is ok to have moments where we drift away from the present, it is not healthy to always live in memories from the past or wishful thoughts about the future. True happiness comes from being present in the moment and finding the joy in everyday events.
A wonderful professor of mine put it simply:
“Depression is what happens when we live in the past. Anxiety is what happens when we live in the future. Peace is what happens when we live in the now.”
I will focus on being present and grateful for each moment as it comes because nothing else is guaranteed beyond that. I will be grateful for each work out because that means my body is healthy and working as it should. I will be present for every dirty diaper and moment with my daughter because these young moments are precious times that I will never get back. I will be in the moment whenever I speak with family and friends because these relationships fill me and sustain me through these hard moments. I will find moments of peace and joy for myself throughout the day even if those are a simple cup a tea or a deep breath outside in the sun.
What can you do to live in the now? How will you be present today?
